WHAT ARE YOUR GLIAL CELLS?
AND WHY ARE THEY SO IMPORTANT?
Your glial cells are the approximately 1,000 trillion brain cells in your brain and nervous system that protect and facilitate the functioning of your 100-200 billion neurons.
They are the specialized brain cells known as "white matter" that cover the axon filaments of your neurons with myelin sheaths in contrast to the "gray matter" that consists of the neuron cell bodies in your cerebral cortex cover of your cerebrum and also in the rest of your connectome (nervous system).
Your brain's 1,000 billion glial cells nourish and lubricate the filaments of your axons and, therby, protect the neurons in your cerebral cortex and connectome from all kinds of chemical toxins and bacteria.
Your glial cells permit action potential spikes of biochemical current to flow through axon filaments faster. Also, they insulate them from the biochemical current flowing through other neurons.
