ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR/EDITORS = [1] Patricia A. Reuter-Lorenz is Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Michigan; [2] Kathleen Baynes is Professor at the Center for Mind and Brain, University of California, Davis; [3] George R. Mangun is Director of the Center for Mind and Brain, Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Neurology, and Director of the Kavli Summer Institute in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of California, Davis, and coeditor of the fifth edition of The Cognitive Neurosciences (MIT Press); ]4] Elizabeth A. He has held research and teaching positions at Caltech, University of Washington, Brown University, and Dartmouth College.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ABOUT MICHAEL GAZZANIGA = The father of cognitive neuroscience, Michael S. Gazzaniga, is the director of the SAGE Center for the Study of the Mind at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the president of the Cognitive Neuroscience Institute, the founding director of the MacArthur Foundation’s Law and Neuroscience Project, and a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Academy of Sciences. He lives in California.

Additional Biographical Information: Michael S. Gazzaniga, one of the premiere doctors of neuroscience, was born on December 12, 1939 in Los Angeles. Educated at Dartmouth College and California Institute of Technology, he has been on the faculty of the Center for Neuroscience, University of California, Davis. His early research examined the subject of epileptics who had undergone surgery to control seizures. He has also studied Alzheimer's and Parkinson's patients and reveals important findings in books such as Cognitive Neuroscience: The Biology of the Mind. While many of his writings are technical, he also educates and stimulates readers with discussions about the fascinating and mysterious workings of the brain. Books such as The Social Brain and The Mind's Past bring forth new information and theories regarding how the brain functions, interacts, and responds with the body and the environment. – Distributed by Syndetic Solutions, Inc.

SUMMARY = Leaders in the cognitive neurosciences address a variety of topics in the field and reflect on Michael Gazzaniga's pioneering work and enduring influence.

BOOK DESCRIPTION = These essays on a range of topics in the cognitive neurosciences report on the progress in the field over the twenty years of its existence and reflect the many groundbreaking scientific contributions and enduring influence of Michael Gazzaniga, "the godfather of cognitive neuroscience" founder of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society, founding editor of the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, and editor of the major reference work, The Cognitive Neurosciences, now in its fourth edition (MIT Press, 2009). The essays, grouped into four sections named after four of Gazzaniga's books, combine science and memoir in varying proportions, and offer an authoritative survey of research in cognitive neuroscience. "The Bisected Brain" examines hemispheric topics pioneered by Gazzaniga at the start of his career; "The Integrated Mind" explores the theme of integration by domination; the wide-ranging essays in "The Social Brain" address subjects from genes to neurons to social conversations and networks; the topics explored in "Mind Matters" include evolutionary biology, methodology, and ethics.
