Note: Lisa Feldman Barrett
has written two best selling books for the general public about a revolutionary new idea concerning how human emotions function and how that idea impacts the rest of modern neuroscience. They should be read and discussed throughout the Humanist Galaxy. This new way of interpreting brain knowledge can help you correct false ancient and recent modern scientific ideas about how human emotions really function. Also Barrett is the chief editor for several academic books on the subject of human emotions.
The first popular book is called How Emotions are made: The Secret Life of the Brain and was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2017 (i-xv, 425 pages).
"The name of the new idea is "constructed emotion." It states that your emotions are constructed in the moment by core systems that interact across your whole brain, aided by a lifetime of learning. Barrett's new theory means that you play a much greater role in your emotional life than you may have thought." The book answers the following four big questions as well as many others: Why do emotions feel automatic? Does rational thought really control emotion? How does emotion affect disease? How can you make your children more emotionally intelligent? (Paraphrased slightly by webmaster from publisher's blurb)
Barrett's second popular book about the brain is called Seven and a Half Lessons about the Brain. It was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2020 (191 pages).
"In seven short essays --- plus a bite-sized story about how brains evolved --- this slim, entertaining, and accessible collection reveals mind-expanding lessons from the front lines of neuroscience research. You will learn where brains came from, how they are structured and why it matters. You will learn how your brain works in tandem with other brains to create everything you experience." (Paraphrased slightly by webmaster from publisher's blurb.)
