SUMMARY ABOUT
YOUR GLIAL CELLS #6
August 17, 2020
WHAT ARE YOUR GLIAL CELLS?
AND WHY ARE THEY SO IMPORTANT?
Your glial cells are the approximately 1,000 trillion cells in your brain system that protect and facilitate the functioning of your 100-200 billion neurons.
They are the specialized brain cells known as "white matter" that cover the axon filaments of your neurons with myelin sheaths. They nourish, lubricate, and protect the axon filaments of your neurons from toxins in your brain and body fluids.
Your glial cells permit action potential spikes of biochemical current (electrical-chemical signals) to flow through the axon filaments faster and they insulate the "spikes" from the biochemical signals of other neurons.
