Quote = "Jill Taylor was a 37-year-old Harvard-trained and published brain scientist when a blood vessel exploded in her brain. This curious neuroanatomist watched her mind completely deteriorate whereby she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. But due to her understanding of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and an amazing mother, she completely recovered her mind, brain and body.". (Paraphrased slightly by webmaster from the publisher's blurb)

Quote = "In the book, Jill shares her recommendations for recovery and the insight she gained into the unique functions of the right and left halves of her brain. Having lost the categorizing, organizing, describing, judging and critically analyzing skills of her left brain, along with its language centers (and thus ego center), Jill's consciousness shifted away from normal reality. In the absence of her left brain's neural circuitry, her consciousness shifted into present moment thinking whereby she experienced herself being 'at one with the universe'." (Paraphrased slightly by webmaster from the publisher's blurb)

Quote = "Based upon her academic training and personal experience, Jill now helps others not only rebuild their brains from trauma, but helps people with normal brains better understand how to 'tend the garden of our minds' to maximize the quality of our lives." AUTHOR NOTES = Jill Bolte Taylor is a neuroanatomist who teaches at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Bloomington, Indiana. She is the National Spokesperson for the Mentally Ill for the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center (Brain Bank) and the Consulting Neuroantomist for the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute. Since 1993 she has been an active member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Her story has been featured on the PBS program Understanding Amazing Brain , among others. She was interviewed on NPR's Infinite Mind and ABC News, and was named one of The 100 of the World's Most Influential People of 2008 in Time Magazine

SUMMARY = A Jill Bolte Taylor is a brain scientist who discusses suffering a stroke at 37 years of age, who describes her discovery of differences in the left and right side of the brain and the steps she took over a period of eight years to recover her health.

BOOK DESCRIPTION = "Taylor was a 37-year-old Harvard-trained and published brain scientist when a blood vessel exploded in her brain. Through the eyes of a curious neuroanatomist, she watched her mind completely deteriorate whereby she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Because of her understanding of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and an amazing mother, Jill completely recovered her mind, brain and body. In the book, Jill shares her recommendations for recovery and the insight she gained into the unique functions of the right and left halves of her brain. Having lost the categorizing, organizing, describing, judging and critically analyzing skills of her left brain, along with its language centers and thus ego center, Jill's consciousness shifted away from normal reality. In the absence of her left brain's neural circuitry, her consciousness shifted into present moment thinking whereby she experienced herself 'at one with the universe'."

"Based upon her academic training and personal experience, now Jill helps others not only rebuild their brains from trauma, but helps those of us with normal brains better understand how we can 'tend the garden of our minds' to maximize our quality of life. Jill pushes the envelope in our understanding about how we can consciously influence the neural circuitry underlying what we think, how we feel, and how we react to life's circumstances. Jill teaches us through her own example how we might more readily exercise our own right hemispheric circuitry with the intention of helping all human beings become more humane. 'I believe the more time we spend running our deep inner peace circuitry, then the more peace we will project into the world, and ultimately the more peace we will have on the planet'."

There is a forum for people who want to build a community around the ideas presented in the best-selling book and a forum for people who have experienced stroke or other medical issues first-hand or through a loved one;. Another forum focuses on techniques for how to achieve a balanced brain; and yet another allows people to share their stories of insight and the life lessons they have learned. These forums can be found on the website: www.mystrokeofinsight.com. There you can read motivational stories and learn more about the ideas presented in the book.

EDITORIAL BOOK REVIEWS

PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY REVIEW = In 1996, 37-year-old neuroanatomist Taylor experienced a massive stroke that erased her abilities to walk, talk, do mathematics, read, or remember details. Her remarkable story details her slow recovery of those abilities (and the cultivation of new ones) and recounts exactly what happened with her brain. This is a fascinating memoir of the brain's remarkable resiliency and of one woman's determination to regain her faculties and recount her experience for the benefit of others.

Taylor repeatedly describes her "stroke of insight" --- a tremendous gratitude for, and connection with, the cells of her body and of every living thing --- and says that although she is fully recovered, she is not the same driven, type-A scientist that she was before the stroke. Her holistic approach to healing will be valuable to stroke survivors and their caregivers, who can pick up suggestions from Taylor's moving accounts of how her mother faithfully loved her back to life. A Viking hardcover.

LIBRARY JOURNAL REVIEW = Taylor is a successful neuroanatomist and an advocate for the mentally ill. In 1996, at age 37, a blood vessel exploded in her brain, triggering a massive stroke. This account of the event and its aftermath is not a dry presentation of medical facts but a warm retelling of how the author's family and friends helped her in her eight-year-long ordeal. Taylor manages to buttress her life experiences with solid facts without diminishing the story's personal, human aspects. She does an excellent job with the reading, speaking in a personal manner and holding listeners' attention. Moving and informative; recommended for public libraries.
