WHAT IS YOUR BRAIN'S PLASTICITY?
AND WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

The evolutionary purpose of your brain's plasticity process (neuroplasticity) is that it makes you an adaptable human being who can learn from changes in the environment and your own personal choices and decisions. The plasticity process happens in the entire biochemical neuronal network, which connects your brain (in your head) to your nervous system (in your body).

Now that you are aware of the massive complexity of the connections of the nerve fibers inside your connectome (neuronal pathways) you will be able to appreciate how the billions of neurons and trillions of synapses make possible your brain's plasticity.

The plasticity process includes your brain's capacity to modify itself by itself. This subconscious physical process enables you to learn new vocabulary words and more complex language skills as you think for yourself. Being more conscious of this nano-microscopic learning process can help you make more useful choices and decisions and manage your habits better as you use your mind's natural willpower and infinitely adaptable imagination.

In addition, it is important to realize that this "synaptic plasticity" process is located at each of the junctions or switches known as your trillions of synapses. It depends upon how well all the other interactive and interdependent parts of your physical brain are connected by your connectome in order to coordinate your mind's mental functions at each moment.

This phenomenal adaptive cellular communication process is caused by the fact that your neurons and your synapses are jointly involved in the exchange of potassium and sodium ions by way of the electro-chemical charges known as action-potential spikes or signals that are sent from one neuron to another along each nerve pathway through the synaptic clefts which connect neurons.

Now modern scientific knowledge can explain in this new scientific language the way in which your 100-200 billion neurons and 1,000 trillion synapses are attached to each other. Your neurons and synapses function together to create your understandable and adaptable self-identity.

Every day your mind interacts with culture and nature to produce new knowledge for developing your self-identity. This happens through the basic human learning process known as long-term-potentiation, which was described earlier in a different step on the Stairway to Enlightenment.

Typically, your long-term memory system stores information about all of your experiences during the daytime. Then, at night your mind sifts through the day's memories to reinforce the most significant ones related to strengthening your personal security and survival needs and ultimately your self-awareness (sense-of-self or self) including your belonging, happiness, and self-esteem needs.

Both your brain and your body need the executive control function of your prefrontal cortex, which is part of your cerebrum, to take charge and manage the rest of your brain's activities. This results in your behavior. This is the point at which your limbic system, which is known as your emotional brain, can upset the homeostasis (balance) of your brain and body.

RECOMMENDATION: You can re-read this summary according to a reinforcement schedule, such as a few hours later and a few days later and then several times in the next week or two. This strategy can help you take advantage of the power of the spaced-repetition method of memorization. Such deep introspection can strengthen your natural willpower and change your adaptable self-identity. This systematic self-empowerment educational process can increase your self-esteem in many profound ways as you learn to predict and adapt to the future.

REMEMBER ALWAYS:
You are your adaptable memory!
